This reinterpretation transforms the Grail from a relic into a living lineage, a secret that the Priory of Sion has guarded for centuries and that the novel's plot revolves around protecting and uncovering.
Identity and Definition
The Holy Grail, long celebrated in Christian tradition as the cup Jesus drank from at the Last Supper and with which Joseph of Arimathea caught His blood at the crucifixion, is redefined in the novel as something far more profound. According to the Priory of Sion, the Grail legend is an ingeniously conceived allegory: the chalice is a metaphor for Mary Magdalene herself, who was the wife of Jesus Christ and the mother of His child. The word "Sangreal" derives from the French "Sangraal," which evolved into "Sangreal" and was later split into "San Greal"—Holy Grail. In its most ancient form, however, the word was divided differently: "Sang Real," which literally means "Royal Blood." This etymology points directly to the Grail's true nature: the royal bloodline of Jesus Christ, carried through Mary Magdalene's womb.
Historical Background and Suppression
The novel traces the suppression of this truth to the early Christian Church. At the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D., the pagan Roman emperor Constantine the Great, seeking to unify a fracturing Rome, elevated Jesus from a mortal prophet to the divine Son of God through a vote. To cement this new doctrine, Constantine commissioned a new Bible that omitted gospels speaking of Christ's human traits—including His marriage to Mary Magdalene—and burned those that did. The Church then launched a smear campaign against Mary Magdalene, recasting her as a prostitute to erase evidence of her powerful family ties and her role as Christ's companion. The sacred feminine, once celebrated as an essential half of spiritual enlightenment, was demonized and banished from the temples of the world. The pentacle, a pre-Christian symbol of the goddess Venus and female divinity, was perverted into a sign of the devil. The Church's campaign of propaganda and bloodshed, including the Inquisition's Malleus Maleficarum (The Witches' Hammer), which instructed clergy how to locate, torture, and destroy women deemed "witches," resulted in the burning of an estimated five million women over three centuries.
The Grail as a Person and a Bloodline
The novel's central revelation is that the Holy Grail is not a thing but a person. Mary Magdalene was the Holy Vessel—the chalice that bore the royal bloodline of Jesus Christ. She was pregnant at the time of the crucifixion and, for the safety of Christ's unborn child, fled the Holy Land with the help of Jesus' uncle, Joseph of Arimathea, to France (then Gaul). There she gave birth to a daughter named Sarah. The Merovingian bloodline, which founded Paris, was the direct result of this lineage, which later intermarried with French royal blood. The Sangreal documents, which the Knights Templar discovered beneath Solomon's Temple, contain tens of thousands of pages of pre-Constantine documents, including the "Q" Document (a book of Jesus' teachings possibly written in His own hand) and The Magdalene Diaries (Mary Magdalene's personal account of her relationship with Christ). These documents, along with the tomb of Mary Magdalene, constitute the treasure that the Priory of Sion has sworn to protect.
The Quest and Its Significance
The quest for the Holy Grail is therefore a quest to kneel before the bones of Mary Magdalene—a journey to pray at the feet of the outcast one, the lost sacred feminine. The Grail's hiding place is a tomb containing her body and the documents that tell the true story of her life. The Priory of Sion, the secret society founded in 1099 by King Godefroi de Bouillon, has a threefold charge: to protect the Sangreal documents, to protect the tomb of Mary Magdalene, and to nurture and protect the bloodline of Christ—those few members of the royal Merovingian bloodline who have survived into modern times. The novel's climax reveals that the Grail lies beneath the Louvre's inverted pyramid, on the ancient Rose Line (the world's first prime meridian), guarded by the blade and chalice symbols fused as the Star of David. This location, a secret known only to the Priory's highest members, is the final resting place of the Holy Grail, where it rests at last beneath the starry skies.
